What is Self Hypnosis

By Brad Greentree | February 11, 2009

For many years self hypnosis was not thought of being something that anyone could do. In fact most people do not believe that self hypnosis was something that you could do yourself. However the very basis of hypnosis is that all hypnosis is self hypnosis. So what is self hypnosis? Well hypnosis is a very relaxed state of mind that can be reached by focusing on a single point or by having a relaxed posture and concentrating on your breathing. In most cases leading someone into hypnosis is done with language, soft tone and utilising the surrounding environment. If can also be done with a physical shift that can create a rapid induction. Again all this can be achieved with self once it has been set up correctly. Once in a hypnotic state you or your hypnotherapist can communicate directly with your unconscious mind to give suggestions on what it is that you are looking at improving or changing.

Fact is you go through the hypnotic state at least twice a day, once just before you wake up and once just before you go to sleep each night. So it’s just a matter of finding out how best to do it with yourself. Hypnosis is a normal natural state of mind. It feels very relaxing and after a good session of 40min you feel very relaxed and rested. With self hypnosis the skill is in not falling asleep!

Once you have yourself in that relaxed hypnotic state it is a process of setting up an internal representation of what it is that you want to be or achieving. If it is pain control then you will need to imagine your hand being put into a bucket of ice and the coolness moving up from your fingers at the same time you are telling yourself that your hand is totally numb and totally, repeatedly.
Once this has been achieved you can move that coolness or numbness to the part of your body needing the pain control. That is ideal for that dentist appointment you have been dreading and has even worked for women in labour!
